Nature Up North
Stargazing Campfire
Nature Up North is excited to invite you to a night of stargazing and astronomy at our fall Campfire with St. Lawrence University Physics Professor Aileen O'Donoghue. On this date the moon will be a waning crescent, just four days away from the new moon and a great time to see stars and planets. We’ll start around the campfire at 7 pm with a short discussion, followed by the opportunity to join Aileen in small groups at a telescope set up a short distance away. This event is free and open to the public, with water and s’mores provided. Bring your friends and family!
Step Up for Maples! Maple Monitoring Info Session
Chances are, if you live in the North Country you're familiar with sugar maple trees. In the face of climate change, there is recent concern about how a warming and increasingly unpredictable climate will affect both sugar maple health and maple syrup production. In this info session at the Canton Free Library, we’ll introduce you to Nature Up North’s ongoing Monitor My Maple project, in which North Country residents record important seasonal observation about maple trees in towns and villages.
MOW the Grasse Water Sampling, Heritage Park

Campfire Series: Storytelling with Paul Hetzler
Stories help us work through the events of our lives and find meaning in the world around us. We learn and communicate by sharing our own experiences and by retelling tales that have been passed down through the generations. Join us for an evening of storytelling with local story teller Paul Hetzler. Sit by the flames and roast s’mores while listening to traditional Adirondack, Mohawk and original stories. You are sure to be both entertained and amused!

“What’s in Your Wood?”: The green mean eating machine (emerald ash borer) and other invasive pests
What’s in your wood? Why shouldn’t you transport firewood? Invasive insects live in your firewood and transporting it could kill the forests you love. Join us at Jacques Cartier State Park for an interactive program to learn more about your firewood and what invasive pests are currently threatening North Country forests.

EAB Volunteer Training: Ogdensburg
Emerald ash borer was confirmed in St. Lawrence County last August and is already on the way to becoming a public safety concern. Infested trees can die in 1-3 years, and are at risk of falling on homes and powerlines. Join us for a walk on the Maple City Trail, starting at the Ogdensburg Visitor's Center to learn how you can help monitor the spread of this invasive pest.
