Nature Up North
Sunset Paddle: Creatures of the Night
Join us for a sunset paddle on the Little and Grasse rivers, searching for nocturnal bats, crepuscular beavers, and other nighttime creatures! In the spooky spirit following Halloween weekend, we'll keep an eye out for animals active in the evening along the river and learn some nighttime ecology. Free and open to all ages and all ability levels, bring your own boat or borrow one from us. Don't forget a headlamp if you have one and some warm layers! Meet at the Little River Boat Launch on Park Street/Rt.
Stargazing Campfire
Nature Up North invites you to a night of stargazing and astronomy at our fall Campfire with St. Lawrence University Physics Professor Aileen O'Donoghue. We’ll start around the campfire at 7:30 pm with a short discussion, followed by the opportunity to join Aileen in small groups at a telescope set up a short distance away. This event is free and open to the public, with water and s’ mores provided. Bring your friends and family!
Fall Foliage Hike to Goodman Mountain
Join Nature Up North for a community hike up Goodman Mountain to admire the fall foliage! Goodman Mountain is a short hike perfect for those looking to get outside and enjoy the bright colors of peak foliage season. The 1.7 mile long trail ascends gently to the summit, where there are beautiful views of nearby Tupper Lake and the Horseshoe Lake Wild Forest. Along the way, there are plenty of flat areas for water breaks and rest stops. There will be a shuttle available from Canton, meeting at the Brewer Bookstore at 8:45 am, or meet at the trail head at 10:00 am.
Wildlife Detector Dog Demo
You’ve heard of drug-sniffing dogs and you may have heard of bomb-sniffing dogs, but have you ever heard of a frog-sniffing dog? “Newt” is a young Labrador retriever who is learning to find and alert to Eastern Spadefoot Toads. These frogs are the rarest amphibian in New England, listed as a threatened species in Massachusetts, and are particularly difficult to find. They spend most of their time underground and only come out on rainy nights – not the best time for two-legged volunteers to be searching the woods.
Coney Mountain Hike: Foraging for Edible Plants
Join us as we look for edible plants on hike up Coney Mountain! We'll be learning how to find and safely identify edible plants, and enjoying the hike to the top. Having a better understanding of what is edible and what isn't will enhance your connection to the local environment as well as your survival skills. Coney Mountain has an easy to moderate trail, 2 miles round trip, with beautiful views at the top! Meet at the trail head at 10am.
Shuttle available from Canton, meet at the Brewer Bookstore at 8:30am, returning at 2:00pm.

Practicing yoga outside connects us to nature in a special way. This is a great opportunity for people of all experience levels to share the joy of outdoor yoga together. Community Paddle: Life on the River
Want to learn more about rivers in the North Country? Join us for a community paddle on the Little and Grasse Rivers where we’ll explore beaver dams, otter slides, and try to find the places where turtles like to hang out. Free and open to all ages and all ability levels. Bring your own boat or borrow one from us for free. Never paddled before? No problem! We'll be happy to provide tips for newer paddlers. Meet at the Little River Boat Launch on Park Street/Rt.
Pollinator Workshop: Build a Bee House!
Join us for a free workshop building your own bee house to attract pollinator-friendly species. Honey bees aren’t the only types of bees buzzing around our gardens— solitary bees actually make up 90% of the bee population! Stings from these bees are rare, and they are even better pollinators than honey bees. In this workshop, you’ll learn how to make a bee house using phragmites, an abundant and invasive reed. You’ll also learn about the Pollinator Protection Project, an initiative working to help establish more pollinator gardens at homes across the North Country. All materials provided.
