In awe of the many beautiful mushrooms on forest floor

North American Millipede

I was walking the Stone Valley Trail with a good friend who was visiting the area, and on our way back, we came across this little guy right on the trail. I had never seen a North American Millipede, and I never knew how big they were. This one was about 5-6 inches long (not for the faint of heart with bugs - my friend refused to pick it up, so I handed her my phone to take a picture while I moved it to a more open spot), and seemed unperturbed when I picked it up. All of those little legs come together for one pretty strong grip!

A Little Lampson Falls

This is the last of three images of the Raquette River that runs alongside the Stone Valley trail. This image also depicts movement with the running water in the image. It contains a miniature waterfall formed by the slope of the landscape. Natural History: Like much of the North Country the landscape of Stone Valley Park was formed by the movement of large land glaciers and ice sheets many thousands of years ago. Their movement has shaped the land and are responsible for the presence of large rocks and boulders in the area.

Hike to Stone Valley Recreation Trail

Beautiful sunny Day. We had 9 in our group for this trip. Interesting Yellow fungus- looks like coral. Notice some posted by Nature up north from your recent trip to Red Sandstone Trail. We were going to look it up to see if we could find it, Thanks for that help. and we are headed for Red Sandstone Trail in 2 weeks.

Particularly like the "historical" signs along the trail telling how all this area was formed over thousands of years.
Our "librarian" was particularly impressed.

Stone Valley Movement

This photo was taken at Stone Valley, a recreation area with a few miles of ADK trails on both sides of the river. The river here flows against the bedrock "grain" which can make interesting marks (like potholes) in the rock. Both sides along the river are heavily wooded. I find this photo interesting because of the contrast in trees - bright green where the sun is and almost black in the shadows. I also like how powerful the water looked at this waterfall.

Peaceful Winter Walk at Stone Valley

The trail was a bit iced over, but it made for a nice peaceful walk. Great spot to watch the raging water with a cup of tea.

The Stone Valley trail is a very gorgeous and the provides some wonderful scenery for all you photographers out there. One interesting thing about the river is that it flows against the "grain" of the bedrock which has created holes in the rocks. It is surrounded by deciduous and coniferous trees. Most people kayak on this river because of the strong currents provided by the water.
