North Country explorer from Plainfield, Vermont
Quite a crowd gathered on the St. Lawrence campus for the 2017 partial eclipse. Jeff Miller, from the SLU physics department, set up telescopes and provided "eclipse glasses" - specially designed temporary shades that allow the wearer to look at the sun during the eclipse. Others brought homemade pin hole viewers and welding glass to explore different effects. The celebration of this unique astronomical event also felt like a celebration of the end of summer - college students and families mingled, blankets were set out, and frisbees and eclipse glasses both flew from hand to hand as everyone enjoyed the spectacle.
Near maximum extent of the eclipse, taken at approximately 2:30pm (eclipse glasses used to cover camera lens).
Earlier on in the eclipse, taken at approximately 2:00pm (eclipse glasses used to cover camera lens).
Some people used homemade pin-hole viewers to see the change in the shape the light projected on the ground.
Can you see the shapes? Hint: look for a heart and a peace sign!
A lively crowd gathered on campus to enjoy the eclipse.
