Join the St. Lawrence Land Trust and Tom Langen on a bird walk at Upper & Lower Lakes State Wildlife Management Area (ULL SWMA) near Canton, NY on Saturday May 19. The walk will be led by Tom Langen, a Clarkson University Biology Professor and St. Lawrence Land Trust Board President.

We will meet at 8:30 AM on Saturday May 19 at the middle ULL SWMA access road off County Route 14. Tom Langen will arrive on bike. He is doing a Green Big Year – seeing how many species he can detect through the year on an area centered on his house, and only under his own power – biking, walking, skiing. No driving anywhere to see a bird. He has seen a number of his Big Green Year species along this road, from Purple Finch to Trumpeter Swan.

The walk is down a gated unpaved road that will pass through swamp forest, large hemlock groves, and managed young forest to a dock with a view of the Middle Lake. The walk is flat, and about two miles round-trip. We will see a great diversity of grassland, old-forest, young-forest, and wetland birds. This area provides one of the best two miles of birding in the North Country. But make sure to cover-up and bring insect repellant: it can be buggy!
