The Nicandri Nature Center in Massena and Nature Up North seek volunteers to sample water quality in Massena at the Fire Department on the Grasse River. This hands-on volunteer sampling session will last just over two hours and focus on simple water-monitoring techniques. Please meet at the Fire Department at 2:00 pm and wear or bring closed-toed shoes that can get wet (boots or old sneakers). Registration is appreciated, please contact Emlyn Crocker at ecrocker@stlawu.edu to register. Volunteers below the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult.

The river access at the Massena Fire Department is one of four sites included in MOW the Grasse (Monitoring Our Water on the Grasse River), launched by Nature Up North in spring 2018. The project aims build a community-based water quality monitoring program for the 73-mile long Grasse River (additional rivers may be added as the project grows). Once collected, data will be curated and shared by Nature Up North. Data is also submitted to the NYS DEC WAVE (Water Assessments by Volunteer Evaluators) program.
