Earth Day 7K Recap

Earth Day 7K Recap

By Jacob Malcomb

Breezy spring weather greeted the 62 runners and walkers who attended the first annual Nature Up North – St. Lawrence Land Trust Earth Day 7K on Saturday, April 23rd in Canton.  The 7 kilometer (4.4mi) course connected the Kip and Saddlemire Trails on the St. Lawrence University campus, passing through scenic forests, fields, and wetlands along the Little River. Racers met mostly dry trail conditions, with a few puddle-hopping sections thrown in for good measure.

Caleb Kessler of Fayston, VT took home the overall title in a time of 28 minutes flat.  Marla Davidson of Warren, VT was fastest among women’s finishers in a time of 29:45.  But the true spirit of the day was to get out on the trails, enjoy the spring weather, and raise awareness for the environmental education and conservation initiatives sponsored by Nature Up North and the Land Trust.  Runners, walkers, strollers, and even a 6 year-old bike rider completed the course.  After the race, participants had an opportunity to win prizes from local businesses including Nature’s Storehouse, littleGrasse Foodworks, Newmanzone Maple, and the Yoga Loft. Reg Johnson of Warsaw, IN won the prize for farthest traveled to reach the race.

Many thanks to all the runners, walkers, and sponsors who helped make our first year a success.  Check out some pictures from the race, and download a results sheet below.

All smiles at the start.
