Mushroom Walk

St. Lawrence Biology instructor Claire Burkum led a fascinating mushroom walk on the Red Sandstone Trail last Friday. A week of rainy conditions made for perfect conditions for fungal growth. We saw a fantastic variety mushrooms, including: boletes, coral fungi, russula, amanita, lactarius, cortinarius, and more. From left to right: a bear's tooth fungi, coral fungi, Claire demonstrating mushroom ID, different growth stages of the purple cortinaria, and a close up of the spongy underside of a Leccinum spp.

I saw so much of that Bear's Tooth Fungi on my last hike up Mt. Arab and didn't know what I was. I needed to go on this Mushroom Walk! Looks like fun.

I'm hesitant to recommend eating fungi you've found in the wild, but I had some bear's tooth prepared by an expert mushroom hunter once and it tastes similar to lobster.
