St. Lawrence Land Trust | Spring Bird Walk

Event date and time
May 12, 2019 - 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM

Join the St. Lawrence Land Trust and Tom Langen on a Mother's Day bird walk at Upper & Lower Lakes State Wildlife Management Area (ULL SWMA) near Canton, NY on Sunday May 12th. The walk will be led by Tom Langen, a Clarkson University Biology Professor and St. Lawrence Land Trust Board President.
We will meet at 8 AM on Sunday May 12 at the middle ULL SWMA access road off County Route 14. This road is 2 miles west of CR 14 intersection with State Highway 68 (or 3 miles east of Rensselaer Falls).  A map can be downloaded here.  Please rsvp to stlawlandtrust@stlawlandtrust.org.

The walk is down a gated unpaved road that will pass through swamp forest, large hemlock groves, and managed young forest to a dock with a view of the Middle Lake. The walk is flat, and about two miles round-trip. We will see a great diversity of grassland, old-forest, young-forest, and wetland birds. This area provides one of the best two miles of birding in the North Country. But make sure to cover-up and bring insect repellent: it can be buggy!

Last year the walk was a success. 14 participants saw or heard 75 species during the 2-mile walk. It was a good mix of beginner and expert birders. Highlights included a pair of Sandhill Cranes (amazing-flyby), pair of Bald Eagles, Peregrine Falcon close-up flyby, Golden-winged and Wilson's Warbler, Black and Common Terns, and some very cooperative Scarlet Tanagers, Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, and Northern Orioles.
