Join the Nature Up North team for our second virtual summer campfire event! This week’s campfire will feature a step by step guide to flower pressing and inspirational ideas for pressed flowers. This is a great opportunity to share creative ideas and learn how to preserve flowers.
The following materials are necessary to participate in the flower pressing workshop in real-time. Before the campfire, we encourage you to take a nature walk or find flowers in your own backyard. If you’re looking for new places to explore, check out our trails page!
-
Responsibly picked fresh flowers; preferably in bloom or budding. Remember to pick in moderation! Follow the 1-in- 20 rule as a quick guide. If there are 20 or so flowers, it is okay to pick 1 and leave the rest for others to enjoy and for the plant to survive! If you pick your flowers a few days before the event, you can prep them to preserve their freshness. To prep, save your flowers in a ziplock and place them in the refrigerator to ensure freshness.
Other considerations when picking your flowers;
-
The color will fade when the flower is pressed, so opt for blooming flowers at their prime!
-
Look for flowers without tears in the petals.
-
Flat budded flowers work best, but globe-shaped buds can be cut in half to press as well.
-
You can arrange multiple flowers or greenery together for a unique print, or press multiple flowers separately.
-
-
Flat paper; printer paper, flat or non-ridged cardboard, or newspaper work best!
-
A few heavy books such as a textbook, phonebook, dictionary, or a brick.
-
The flowers will be pressed inside one book and the pages may wrinkle due to the moisture, so an older book works best. The rest of the books will be stacked on top and not in danger of being wrinkled!
-
Everyone is welcome to listen along and learn how to press on their own time even if your materials aren’t prepped!
We hope to see you soon!
