Porcupine Den

Porcupine Dens

There's four porcupine dens in this area...a small depression in the side of the hill. I used to walk around this area in the 1970's. Seemed like a good thing to take my father up as we practice hiking locally during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Blue skies at Stone Valley, porcupine spotted

After a morning of freezing rain, the blue skies in the afternoon were a great incentive to get out. This was the first time taking my dog out to the trails at Stone Valley, and she enjoyed exploring the east side of the river. She even found a porcupine - luckily safely tucked away in his den! Trail conditions were very icy, I was glad to have crampons with me and would recommend them to anyone who goes out.

Porcupine in a tree

I was walking through the woods when my dogs started sniffing around a tree. I looked down at a large pile of droppings, and then looked up to see this little guy/girl wondering why they were being disturbed.

Old Porcupine Den

This was a fun trip to Lampson Falls. As part of our nature walk we spent a good amount of time looking for porcupines and their dens. We spotted a lone porcupine up about 35 feet in a hemlock tree, their favorite snack. Hemlock branches were scattered everywhere along the ground as well, good sign that porcupines were in the area. As I was looking for more I came across what appears to be an old den. There was nothing inside, but it was full of droppings from its previous occupant. A really nice shot of a winter hideout!

A hollow, fallen tree provides a den for a small porcupine.
