Northern Flicker on Saddlemire Trail

This photograph of a Northern Flicker was captured using a game camera on the Saddemire Trail. Flickers are one of my favorite birds, so this was really exciting!

Wrangling Today, Protecting Tomorrow

The Canadian goose population began to decline in the 1970s due to increased harvesting. However, long-term efforts from our dedicated local Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) are successfully reversing the decline.

A North Country Turtle in Trouble

Perhaps due to their iconic shells, great longevity, and slow movements, turtles form an assemblage of about 320 species that are instantly recognized and often loved, by nearly everyone.  However, according to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, turtles as a group are declining worldwide, faster than nearly every other vertebrate group.  Threats include widespread habitat loss, exploitation for food and for the pet trade, and fragmentation of habitats by roads and agricultural fields.

Pollinator Workshop: Build a Bee House!

Event date and time
July 12, 2019 - 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM
Event description

Join us for a free workshop building your own bee house to attract pollinator-friendly species. Honey bees aren’t the only types of bees buzzing around our gardens— solitary bees actually make up 90% of the bee population! Stings from these bees are rare, and they are even better pollinators than honey bees. In this workshop, you’ll learn how to make a bee house using phragmites, an abundant and invasive reed. You’ll also learn about the Pollinator Protection Project, an initiative working to help establish more pollinator gardens at homes across the North Country. All materials provided.

Frogs on the kip trail

Our Nature Up North summer naturalist interns Emily and Lydia lead a frog walk this afternoon on the St. Lawrence University Kip Trail in Canton. The group was successful, spotting both bull frogs and green frogs in a wetland off the Little River.

Painted Turtle

Spotted a painted turtle on the Little River last week! While paddling, I saw him sitting on a log in the water.
