Frozen beauty

Loved the blades of grass with so much ice built up. I’m sad for the trees but it is beautiful.

Goodnow Mountain

Saturday’s (12/28/2019) weather wasn’t the sunniest but was perfect for hiking. Cool, but not cold, and very little snow and NO mud. Our destination of choice was the Goodnow Mountain fire tower in Newcomb NY (east of Long Lake). The trail is on the SUNY ESF Newcomb campus.

This hike is 2 miles round trip (1 mile to the summit) with some steep sections and a rocky, root covered trail. Please wear warm layers and pack water, a snack or lunch, and an extra layer, as it gets windy on top! Depending on conditions the trail may be snowy or icy.

Wolf & Moon Lakes- Edwards

Christmas Eve offered the perfect weather for a trek into Moon & Wolf lakes. The ground is frozen, but not enough snow to need snowshoes. The trip is about five miles in total.

The End can be Beautiful

I went to get in my car and leave for work and I noticed this leaf on my windshield. I have Maples all around me and no idea where this little guy came from. But, I took in the beauty of the intricacies of nature in its final moments.

Winter Wonderland

Driving into the Buckhorn Club after a snowy night. It was picture perfect!

Climate Action in the North Country Ramping Up

On Friday, December 6th, a group of people sang together in harmony in the Canton Park.  We were bundled up in coats, hats, and gloves as icy wind and snow swept through town. The lyrics, I’m Dreaming of a Green Christmas, joined us for a singular purpose - climate activism. As cars sped by and people passed with children, we raised our voices in song. The goal of all 50 people present, old and young, was to send a desperate plea for concrete climate action to our government.

Potsdam Climate Vigil

Big Trout & Hitchens ponds

I spent a snowy Veteran's Day exploring some old camp ruins around the Horseshoe Lake area. These were fairly off the grid, but I found them without "too" much difficulty. I've been to the ruins of the Hitchens camps many times, but I wanted to find these particular ones. The most prominent features of these sites are the fireplaces.

The camps were burned by the DEC when they acquired the property as they were non-conforming structures, a common but unfortunate occurrence when dealing with Adirondack properties.

Goodman Mountain

Sunday started cold (around zero) but warmed to the lower 30s by mid-morning and made for a great hike to Goodman Mt in Tupper Lake. The 3.3-mile trail is in pretty good shape, snowshoes are not really needed yet, but microspikes were a welcome addition. This hike is part of the Tupper Lake Triad. This is always a nice shorter hike and is pretty enjoyable at any time of year.
