Nature Up North
Community Paddle: Birdwatching on the Little River
An abundance of birds live on and around the many streams and rivers of the North Country. Everything from songbirds to wading birds to waterfowl to birds of prey can be spotted from the comfort of a canoe.
Join us for the final installment of our community paddle series to learn about the birds that take advantage of our rivers, and to spot and identify the birds of the Little and Grasse Rivers.
Frog Finding
Ready for some fun with frogs? Join Nature Up North for an amphibian-filled evening on Wednesday, July 26th from 7:00-8:30 P.M. We’ll meet at the Wachtmeister Field Station to learn about frogs and toads. Afterwards, we’ll explore the Kip Trail and try and catch some frogs.
This event is free and open to all ages. All kids under 13 must be accompanied by an adult. Please come prepared for a short hike. Wear clothes and footwear that can get a little muddy. Bug spray is also recommended; We will provide some, but feel free to bring your own.
Community Campfire: Fireflies
Summer is in full swing and fireflies are beginning to light up the night sky. Join us for another installment in our community campfire series on Thursday, July 20th from 7:00-9:00 P.M. to learn about fireflies and how they light up. We’ll also try and catch some fireflies so we can witness their bioluminescence first-hand. As always, we’ll end the night with some smores.
Writing to Reconnect
Writing to Reconnect
Join us along the Raquette River where we’ll be examining natural elements for the articulate expression of our shared environment and ourselves. Today, the way we often say that it's “too easy” to lose track of time on our phones for hours is similar to how we used to talk about the woods. Let’s reimmerse, reunite and reconnect with our natural surroundings by allowing them to inspire and transport our minds to the page; whether that be presently, through past memories, or in future hopes.
Community Paddle: Beavers and Beyond
In terms of aquatic mammals, the North Country has more to offer than just beavers. You may be surprised to learn that our rivers are also home to muskrats and even the elusive river otter!
Come join us on Friday, July 14th from 6:30-8:00 PM, for another installment in our community paddle series. We’ll talk about the aquatic mammals of the North Country. We’ll paddle the little river while looking for signs of beavers, muskrats, and river otters, and maybe even see one or two if we’re lucky.
Community Campfire: Bats
It’s no coincidence bats live in caves. They ROCK. Join us for our Summer Campfire Series this week as we learn about our nocturnal backyard buds, BATS! We'll meet at the Wachtmeister Field Station in Canton. Stay as long as you’d like! Reach out to info@natureupnorth.org or contact @natureupnorth on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter with any questions. Don’t forget your bug spray, see you there!
